Fun Surprises Found at Local Boutique
A couple of week ago. I participated in a small boutique near my home. This particular boutique did not have a lot of public traffic, so much of our time was spent getting to know the other vendors, purchasing gifts for Christmas and other upcoming events.
I am always amazed at the talents of many people. I especially enjoyed the air dried peonies, daisies, and blue flower which I can't remember the name of. A mother and daughter had a display of many amazing arrangements for fall, gift baskets, and these beautiful dried flowers. Because I am a flower lover, and my entire life have loved arranging, growing and working with flowers, I had a deep appreciation for their work. I was amazed at how inexpensive the arrangements were. I was worried for them, wondering how they could even cover their costs. I remember the day of making flower arrangements for boutiques, and the desperation to sell them, just to not have to store or carry them around. Each moving, meant damage to the designs. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed looking and buying some of their wonderful work.
I was also amazed by some beautiful hand sewn book marks. Created by a gal who computerizes the design, and her sewing machine creates the designs. I was astounded to think a machine could do this. How incredible! She sells her product on Etsy as Lanette's Designs (Home of Freestanding Lace & Home Decor. Her web address is http://www.etsy.com/shop/lanette35. Her email is: lanette35@gmail.com.
My next find was the sweetest gal with homeade jams. She had many varieties, and then I discovered her amazing barbeque sauce that her boyfriend had encouraged her to bottle this year. It truly is amazing. It reminds me of Wingers amazing sauce, but has a fun little kick to it. I didn't dare ask for the recipe, but told her I would send out her email address in case others were interested in partaking of such yumminess! Her name is Leila Weeks. Telephone # 208-530-0380. Myrts Christmas Candy
Myrt would prepare Christmas candy months before Christmas. She would have many many cookie sheets full of turtles, almond joys, toffee, peanut brittle, peanut butter cups. It was all incredible. She would often give boxes of candy to us for Christmas. This was a treasure hidden away in the cupboard for special times of enjoyment. As a daughter-in-law married into the family, I regret not ever spending a day with her to learn and watch her candy making process. I did gather recipes of some of our favorites.
I would love for family members to share their memories in the kitchen with Myrt.

Myrts Christmas Candy Recipes
Walnut Turtles

36 packaged caramels unwrapped, or homemade carmel
3 tablespoons butter or margarine
1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
2/3 c. semisweet or milk chocolate pieces
1 1/2 tsp. shortening
Cover baking sheets with waxed paper and arrange walnut pieces in 28-30 clusters, spaced at least 1 inch apart.
Place caramels in top of dbl boiler with butter. Set over boiling water. Heat until caramels are completely melted, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat, add vanilla extract, stir until butter and vanilla are thoroughly mixed with caramel.
Drop by teaspoonfuls onto center of each walnut cluster, making sure that caramel touches all the walnut pieces to hold them together. Allow them to cool.
Melt chocolate with shortening over hot, but not boiling water. Spread over caramel and nut candies and allow to set before removing from waxed paper. Makes 28-30 turtles

Yolanda Made my Day
I met Yolanda today on a phone call to settle some insurance disputes. She calmed my mood, and brightened my day. In my quest to be more positive and grateful, I feel that my experience with Yolanda was set before me as an example of someone I really want to be like.
We have been through a lot this past summer with my son Levi, who was involved in a bicycle accident while vacationing at Flaming Gorge Resevoir. While lazily riding along in our campground, he hit a bulge from a tree trunk in the pavement which threw him over the handlebars and slid down the payment on his elbow, which snapped his upper arm. An ambulance was called, his arm was set with a splint, and to try to save money, we put him in the back of our truck and drove and hour to the nearest hospital in Rock Springs.
After being seen by doctors in Rock Spring, we were told that he would have to be flown to the Primary Childrens Hospital in Salt Lake City. We were put in an ambulance to go to their airport, then loaded into an air med airplane, flown to Salt Lake City, put into another ambulance and taken to Primary Children's hospital. It was incredibly hard night with a son that was in horrific pain; any tiny movement was more than he could take. He was seen by many doctors, because they didn't know if he had head, neck or back trauma. He was finally sedated while they reset his arm into a splint, and then went through surgery the following day to screw everything back together.
So, we lived through this traumatic event. He wore a cast for 5 weeks, up to his shoulder. When they took off his cast, they discovered that some extra bone had grown around the break and around his elbow, which drilled a hole through his elbow skin and caused an infection to start. Immediately, he was put back into surgery to see if the infection had gone to his bone. We were happy to find that it had not traveled, but was just centered around the elbow. So, he was cleaned up, stitched up, and then Levi went about trying to keep his wound sterile and clean as it continued to drain.
After a period of several weeks, and many emails and visits to the doctor, it was determined that Levi needed another surgery to remove all hardware, replace a nerve in it's proper place and clean out more infection. Now, Levi continues to watch and care for the wound which is still trying to heal up. In the meantime, he attends physical therapy trying to gain back his range of motion, then to develop some muscle back in his arm. Needless to say, this has been a frustrating, expensive event in our life. Now we are dealing with the insurance company to pay all the medical bills of hospitals, doctors, ambulances, etc.
Today, I had reached my boiling point where I was ready to explode. Our insurance is still denying claims that should have been paid months ago. After calling them stupid, idiotic, and what is their unintelligent problem, my husband forced me to settle into a conference call with our insurance. This is where we met Yolanda. She is a very pleasant women from Georgia. I presume she may be black, by the way she talked. She never got defensive, never raised her voice. She remained calm and pleasant the entire time we were on the phone. Our phone conversation lasted over an hour. She patiently conferenced to some of our billers, she went through every claim and told us the status, dates paid, what was happening to each claim. I have never met anyone so patient, kind, & willing to serve to make life better for others, especially angry others.
By the time we were finished with our conversation, I had such a desire to express my appreciation, a desire to meet this women personally, a desire to recommend her for woman of the year, and a desire for me to be just like Yolanda.
In the past month or so, I have been on a journey to become more positive, wanting to develop this Christlike trait. My journey has been an incredible one. I have found that there is an energy that comes with being positive and grateful. It is almost like a magnet. Good things come to those who are positive. People want to be around those that are happy and positive. With Yolanda, because of her positive kind attitude, I wanted to do something to make her life better; recommend her for a raise or send her a gift or a thank you. She was such a positive influence on my day. Just in this instance her attitude created good things to come to her. Positive attracts positive, and negative attracts negative. The more I am in a positive state of mind, the more I see, feel and recognize the blessings, the attractions, and the joy that come from being positive. Everyone wins in a situation where there is positivity. I am determined to develop the gift of being positive. I know it will truly change my life and the life of so many others.
Thank you Yolanda and others out there that make this world a better place to be. It is people like you that truly spread sunshine and joy in this world.

Believe in Yourself
"Believe in yourselves and in your capacity to do something worthwhile... You have tremendous capacity. You do not have to be a genius to do something worthwhile in the world. The major work of the world is done by ordinary people who have learned to work in an extraordinary way. This is what makes the difference." Gordon B. Hinkley

Autumn
When the trees their summer splendor
Change to raiment red and gold,
When the summer moon turns mellow,
And the nights are getting cold;
When the squirrels hide their acorns,
And the woodchucks disappear;
Then we know that it is autumn,
Loveliest season of the year.

Change for the Better
"If you always do what you've always done, you''ll always get what you've always gotten, and you'll always feel what you've always felt!" (Tony Robbins)
Is today your day to make a change in your life. "Personal change is becoming different by removing, replacing or substituting behaviors, ideals, attitudes, desires and goals to get a different outcome. We cannot make lasting changes until we are willing to give up old responses and attitudes and exchange or replace them with something different instead." (Rena Peterson - Walking with Jesus Christ -365 days of Miracles)
Try doing something different today that might move you towards your dreams. Feel the energy and excitement from daring to do something different!

One Step Forward
"The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step." Lao Tzu
Each day is filled with many demands that can sink our spirits deeply. Take time to be grateful for each accomplishment whether it be small or huge. One step forward is a step in the right direction to achieving our goals, completing a project, or feeling success.
"By small and simple things are great things brought to pass". Alma 37:6
"The average woman today, I believe, would do well to appraise her interests, evaluate the activities in which she is engaged, and then take steps to simplify her life, putting things of first importance first, placing emphasis where the rewards will be greatest and most enduring, and ridding herself of the less rewarding activities". Order, Balance & Plan for Success
Today, my intentions were to highlight some organization ideas, but as I went to copy and paste from another great website, I instead decided to share where I begin with order in my life. When I have a plan for each week, it offers me peace.
In order to keep balance in my life, I try to assign different events to each day of the week, so I don't have to be bogged down with so many things coming at me everyday. Here is a sample of my ideal schedule for each week. Granted many things come up, and it is always a battle to stick to my schedule, but it gives me direction, a map to follow. Sometimes, I get off course and have to make efforts to get back on track.
Sundays: Plan my Week Activities & Menu's, Spiritual Study, Church Meetings, Enjoy family, Scrapbooking
Mondays: Organization & Cleaning Projects, Family Night
Tuesdays: Finances
Wednesdays: Laundry
Thursday: Errands, Service, Prof. Meetings
Friday: Fun Day or Catch Up (unfinished items during the week), Date Night
Saturday: Yard Work, Projects, Family Outings, Sunday Prep's
(These are the functional things that have to be done each week aside from my work (piano teaching), kids activities, church assignments, etc)
Each day, I have set a goal to start my day with prayer and at least 30 minutes of excercise, and at least 30 minutes of spiritual study. This is the most important investment to my well being. Because life is full of surprises, these goals don't always happen. But they are present in my mind and probably the most important part of my day. These items are an investment that in return offer a huge reward.
At one particularly stressful time in my life when things seemed to be upside down, nothing working out as it should, feeling stress financially, and stress with my husbands job security. It was one of those times in life where really you feel like you want to give up and wonder if this is all there is too this life. I found myself pouring my heart out to God in prayer, fasting, and attending our temple for answers and peace. One morning I felt incredibly peaceful and my mind flowed with inspiration for my family and what we could do in our life to bring about balance and peace. I reluctantly share this, as it is personal, but feel there is great wisdom from this experience and hope that others might benefit from this.
This is what I wrote in my journal:
- #1 In our family, we must have order from everyone---order in our lives, work, school and play. If everyone cooperates, things in our life will mesh and we will live in harmony.
- #2 We must take care of our own person first in order to provide and serve others (eating healthy, enough sleep, excercise, limited hours of work, etc.) there must be a balance.
- #3 We must fill our cups spiritually at the beginning of the day, so we will have strength to keep things in order.
- #4 Each person in our family must have a plan for success. Our family plan involves each person in the family, so individually each must have their own plan for success. Cooperation from all will keep balance in our home.
- #5 Keep a family plan booklet that has a copy of each individual's plan for success.
- #6 Seek for simplicity - don't complicate things, look for the simple way in all things. Simplify it is the simple way.
- #7 Respect and honor Family Night and time for Family Counseling, Family Scripture Study, and Family Prayer. Expect success from honoring these principles.
- #8 Order in each of our days will provide success. Balance will help us be successful in all things.
- #9 It is not about one day at a time, or one moment. It is about a big picture, moving forward to build and create our big picture. Some days we can only think of a moment at a time, but if our actions are organized with a plan to move towards our big picture. We will be successful.
- #10 Ask myself daily is our family cart balanced or is something in our life causing it to tip over. We must have balance.
